A large dining area is lit by drop-down light fixtures. The wooden tables are all fitted with Nordic-designed chairs, easy to pull out or move elsewhere. The walls are decorated with oil paintings. The colours are warm yellows and pastel greens, mixed in with the rich textured oak tables and chairs.

I know it’s a little gauche to review the café of a museum, and not the museum itself, but I am always asked for good places to meet pals for lunch, coffee etc., and The Commons Café is that perfect intersection of good food, handy location, considerable access, and a warm atmosphere.

In the basement of the Museum of Literature Ireland, the food here is simple but great; all day breakfast featuring a Blaa and brioche French toast, soups and salads, toasties and then pastries and cakes galore. Business meeting, friend date, a day out with your parents, this is a place that fits all criteria for A Nice Time™.

If ever a paragraph will sell you on somewhere to grab a bite in Dublin, this is it:

Set in the original student dining halls of UCD Newman House, the Commons has long been a space for sharing food and ideas amongst friends. In its newest form, led by sisters Domini and Peaches Kemp, the Commons continues this wonderful legacy, showcasing Ireland’s beautiful produce and culinary heritage.

Domini Kemp? Say no more.
